Indirect Costs
Indirect costs are included in your financial aid budget. These are not direct charges from the university but allowances that are given to cover expenses you may incur while attending school for the months you are enrolled each year of the program. Students are encouraged to carefully review their budgeted amounts and plan wisely to ensure all expenses are adequately covered.

Indirect costs are based on the following amounts per month, for the months enrolled:
- Living Expenses: $1,950/month (housing, food, utilities)
- Transportation: $400/month
- Personal/Miscellaneous: $350/month
- Clinical Rotation expenses: $250/month (third and fourth-year students)
Books, Supplies, Course Materials, and Equipment Allowances
Medical students are required to purchase equipment/instruments for the program. An amount of $1,000 is budgeted for the first-year cost of attendance to purchase these items (this includes an allowance for a PDA). Medical students are also required to purchase a laptop computer. An amount of $1,500 is budgeted as one-time technology fee for the laptop is included in the first-year cost of attendance. These allowances are in addition to a budgeted amount of $2,000 for books and other program-related materials for the first year.
Exact costs may depend on specific courses and actual expenses may vary.
Exam Allowances
- Second Year: The cost of the COMLEX Level 1 Exam ($715) is added to the second year fall semester cost of attendance. An allowance of $1,000 is included for board prep materials.
- Third Year: The cost of the COMLEX Level 2 Exam ($715) and $1,200 travel allowance to cover the cost for on-campus clinical skills examination in place of the COMLEX PE are added to the third year fall semester cost of attendance. An allowance of $1,000 is included for board prep materials.
Students may request consideration for an increase to their cost of attendance (if needed) to cover additional costs for residency interviews and other educationally related expenses. Please email sfs@dream-kingdom.com for a Request for Cost of Attendance Increase Form, which may be submitted along with documentation supporting the additional expenses (e.g. receipts for transportation, hotel, and ERAS fee).
Health Insurance as a direct or indirect cost
Health Insurance is a direct cost because it is a requirement of the State of Maine. If you currently have insurance, you must opt-out of the university health insurance through submitting a health insurance waiver. Otherwise, health insurance charges are automatically applied to your student account.
If you waive the university health insurance, the insurance charge will be waived from your student account in TouchNet. However, the cost of insurance will still be reflected in the cost of attendance. This means your loan offer amounts are set up to cover this expense to assist with purchasing health insurance through another provider.

The cost for UNE's 2022–2023 annual health insurance policy for graduate/professional students (except first-year College of Osteopathic Medicine students) is $4,174 for the 9/01/2022–8/31/2023 coverage period. Due to a longer academic year, the health insurance rate for first-year College of Osteopathic Medicine students is $4,883 for coverage beginning on 7/1/2022–8/31/2023.
New students whose program (P.S.M., M.S.N.A., PA, M.S.O.T.) begins in Summer 2022 are charged $1,155 for the summer coverage period of 05/23/2022-8/31/2022, and then the annual coverage rate of $4,174 (with the fall tuition billing) for coverage from 9/1/2022–8/31/2023. Students enrolled in the new PSM in Ocean Food Systems Program are charged $1,224 for summer coverage period of 5/17/2022–8/31/2023, and then the annual coverage rate of $4,174 for coverage from 9/1/2022–8/31/2023. New students should waive/enroll for the summer semester (beginning in April) and then re-enroll/waive for the following academic year, starting on July 1.
